Green bonds were created as an instrument to earmark finance for climate and environmental projects. Since the issue of the first green bond in 2007, the green bond market has been growing. On the Euronext stock exchange, the euro was the most prevalent currency for green bond listing. In 2020, the green bonds listed in euro were 44.7 billion U.S. dollars out of the total 52.8 billion U.S. dollars listed, or almost 85 percent by value.

U.S. dollar values were exchanged using the annual average exchange rate for each currency for the year of issuance, with bonds from 2021 being the annual average to July 27, 2021.
Figures include green bonds and bonds linked to sustainability; social bonds are excluded.
