Cigarette prices in Spain have experienced a considerable increase in the past decade. There was a significant price jump in a 20 pack of Marlboro cigarettes between 2010 and 2011, when a pack of cigarettes rose from 3.6 euros to 4.25 euros. This was mainly due to the 2011 smoking ban, which restricted smoking in all indoor public places as well as near to hospital or school facilities. The price of a 20 pack of Marlboro cigarettes amounted to 5.34 euros in 2022.
A market captained by Philipp Morris
Marlboro is the top-selling tobacco brand in Spain, with sales of more than 1.3 billion euros in 2022. The American brand has remained in this position while its local competitor in the market, the Spanish brand Fortuna, lost market share. In fact, Camel, Winston Classic, Chesterfield and Lucky Strike overtook Fortuna, making its lose its prime spot on the national tobacco scene.
Marlboro was born at the beginning of the 20th century, when the Philipp Morris company wanted to carve out a niche in the women's market. This large conglomerate also owns other leading tobacco brands such as L&M and Chesterfield and its Spanish subsidiary controls three of the leading brands in the Spanish market. As a result, Philipp Morris Spain SL's sales exceeded 610 million euros in 2021, making it the leading tobacco wholesaler in Spain.
The Spanish tobacco industry in slow decline
Since the harmful effects of tobacco on health were discovered in the middle of the last century, governments around the world have been working to minimize its consumption. In Spain, the 2006 anti-smoking law set a precedent and smoking was banned in many public places. Therefore, the value of tobacco production in Spain has decreased.
Even so, the industry's decline is slow. Price increases have mitigated the losses due to the fall of the tobacco sales. Without going any further, Spain continues to have a rather high percentage of smokers in Europe, with over 23 percent of men and 16 percent of women using tobacco on a daily basis.
