According to a survey conducted by Ipsos, around 17 percent of the Malaysian respondents stated that purchasing fish that was caught or farmed locally was very important to them as consumers. Only one percent stated it was not important at all. Malaysia is the biggest seafood consumer in Southeast Asia and the fisheries sector plays an important role to the national economy. However, Malaysia's marine natural resources are currently declining due to overfishing and illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing.
