Travel and tourism's direct contribution to employment APAC 2022, by country
As one of the Asia-Pacific region's leading industries, it is unsurprising that the travel and tourism sector provided nearly 63 million jobs in China in 2022. Likewise, an astronomical number of jobs was also generated in India thanks to the travel and tourism market, in which a staggering 37 million jobs were created. In fact, many Asia-Pacific countries made the worldwide ranking for the most jobs produced by the travel and tourism industry.
Economic contribution
Through the generation of more jobs and increased levels of affluence in many Asia-Pacific countries, citizens now have more money to be able to travel. Thus, domestic and intra-regional travel is on the rise throughout the region. This in turn has created a positive impact on the economy, as overall domestic tourism expenditure has increased, prevalent especially in Southeast Asia. Along with an increased number of jobs and higher levels of tourist expenditure, the travel and tourism industry also made significant contributions towards the GDPs of Asia-Pacific countries. Thus, many countries depend on the industry to maintain and stimulate their economies. In this way, many countries are making it easier for travelers to gain access into their countries, through relaxing visa requirements and introducing cheaper airlines.

Despite the huge success of the industry, it appears the Asia-Pacific region may have to adapt to the current demands of travelers, who increasingly wish for more environmentally friendly methods of travel. Interestingly, the annual travel and tourism competitiveness index highlighted APAC’s environmental sustainability as a weakness of the region, compared to the global average. Nevertheless, APAC still proved itself in terms of growing popularity, as the region demonstrated high tourist arrivals.
