Over 70 percent of respondents felt that congestion was the key externality due to urban commuting in India, according to a survey on urban mobility in 2019. Notably, nearly 60 percent of the surveyed respondents rated all the considered consequences such as congestion, air pollution, noise pollution and impact on climate change as highly important.
Leading consequences of urban commuting across India in 2019
Respondents were from six metro cities, 16 tier one cities and 38 tier two cities.
The percentage of instances in which each issue was selected to be of high importance is taken into consideration.
Note:
Metro - population of over seven million
Tier one - population between 2 million and 7 million
Tier two - population between 0.1 million and 2 million
