The sanitary emergency of coronavirus (COVID-19) is believed to lead to a decrease in the value added at basic prices in all Italian regions. Nevertheless, some regions are more affected than others. The regions that will experience the largest drop in value added are Lombardy, Veneto, and Emilia-Romagna, in the North of the country. In these regions, the value added at basic prices is estimated to decrease by at least two percent. Lombardy, Veneto, and Emilia-Romagna are the regions registering the highest number of coronavirus cases in Italy.
Italy is one of the countries with the highest number of coronavirus cases worldwide. This virus has now infected people in over 100 countries across six continents.
Impact of coronavirus (COVID-19) on value added at basic prices in Italy as of March 2020, by region
The data show the impact of the sanitary emergency in the Italian regions between 2019 and 2020.
The source considered the negative effects on the different economic sectors registered between the mid-February and the end of April. Data are adjusted with regard to the number of infected individuals as of March 2.
The estimates are added algebraically to the forecasts made for 2020 before the outbreak of COVID-19. They do not take into account the effects of the cooling off of domestic demand (potential loss of jobs) and the slowdown in world trade.
