Number of healthcare workers by type and region Spain 2019
Over 158 thousand healthcare professionals worked in the Spanish National Health System in 2019. Around 54 percent of the total worked in hospitals, with Catalonia and Madrid accounting for the largest number. That year, the amount of healthcare professionals who were part of primary care teams reached over 36 thousand, including family doctors and pediatricians. In 2020, around 84 percent of collegiate doctors in Spain were registered as active.
