In a survey conducted in December 2019, approximately 38 percent of Japanese respondents agreed that giving the 2020 Olympics and Paralympics in Tokyo a theme of "reconstruction" might encourage people who were affected by the Great East Japan earthquake, also known as Tohoku earthquake, occurred in 2011. With another approximately 39 percent agreeing to the statement, a majority of around 77 percent foresaw this effect.
