Over 960 million liters of wine was produced in Australia in the 2023 financial year, of which over 500 million liters were red varieties. That year, red wine varieties also accounted for the largest share of Australia’s total wine export volume.

Australia is one of the leading countries in wine exports worldwide, producing and exporting millions of liters of wine in 2023. South Australia is the heart of the country’s wine industry, home to the highest number of wine producers in Australia, followed closely by Victoria. The revenue of Australia’s wine industry is expected to witness year-on-year growth from 2023 to 2028, with still wine remaining the largest wine segment in Australia. However, Australia’s wine industry has entered a period of uncertainty, following a plummet in wine exports to one of its former top export markets, China.

Alcohol trends in Australia

In recent years, there has been a rise in consumer demand for non- or low-alcoholic beverages across Australia, as consumers increasingly want to moderate their alcohol intake. Australian consumers’ willingness to spend on no/low alcohol beverages is growing, with those aged 25-30 accounting for the largest group of no/low alcohol alternative drinkers in Australia. The country’s non-alcoholic drinks sector is expected to boom over the next few years, with Australian drinks retailer, Endeavour Group, reporting that its sales of non-alcoholic drinks had increased by more than 83 percent in 2021. Nevertheless, the price of drinks remains one of the leading factors for choosing beverages when going out among consumers in Australia.
