The number of death row inmates acquitted in the high courts across India amounted to 40 in 2022. This was an increase compared to those who received similar verdicts in 2017. More than 25 percent of the prisoners on death row between 2000 and 2014 were exonerated by the supreme court of the south Asian nation.
