In 2019, the countries which scored the highest in the East Asia and Pacific region in terms of environmental sustainability were South Korea and New Zealand, in which they both scored 4.7 out of seven. Comparatively, Mongolia scored 3.6 out of seven in terms of its environmental sustainability. The average environmental sustainability score for the East Asia Pacific region was 4.3 out of seven. A high environmental sustainability score is vital for the tourism industry, as a country's natural landscapes are often an enticing factor for prospective tourists.
Environmental sustainability score in the travel and tourism competitive index in the East Asia Pacific region in 2019, by country or region
The Travel & Tourism Competitiveness Index (TTCI) aims to measure the factors and policies that make it attractive to develop the travel & tourism sector in different countries. The index is made up of four sub-indexes: Enabling Environment; Travel and Tourism Policy and Enabling Conditions; Infrastructure; and Natural and Cultural Resources. 136 countries are evaluated. The Index scores on a scale from 1 to 7 with 7 being the best rating.
The environmental sustainability score is calculated by taking the following into consideration: the stringency and enforcement of the government’s environmental regulations and variables assessing the status of water, forest resources and marine life, proxied by fish stock status.
