The European Union has a far larger export market for medium-high research and development (R&D) intensive products than any other country, amounting to 2.5 trillion U.S. dollars in 2018. This compares to around 696.88 billion U.S. dollars for China, and 588.75 billion U.S. dollars for the United States in the same year.

Medium-high R&D intensive products include weapons and ammunition; motor vehicles; medical and dental instruments; machinery and equipment; chemicals and chemical products; electrical equipment; and railroad, military vehicles, and transport classified by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development.
China includes Hong Kong, and excludes bilateral flows between mainland China and Hong Kong.
Other selected Asia includes India, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam.
