From 2017 to 2018, more than 155,000 Canadians were hospitalized for harm caused by substance use. Types of harm included drug or alcohol overdose, severe withdrawal symptoms, injury caused by intoxication, chronic conditions such as liver cirrhosis, or drug-induced psychosis. A wide variation in hospitalization rate exists between Canadian provinces and territories. This statistic shows the age-standardized hospitalization rate for substance use per 100,000 people in Canada from 2017 to 2018, by jurisdiction.
Rate of hospital stays for harm caused by substance abuse in Canada from 2017 to 2018, by jurisdiction (per 100,000 population)*
* The rate is age-adjusted per 100,000 population, age 10 and older.
Hospital stays for conditions partially attributable to substance use (e.g. cancer, strokes, respiratory disease, trauma) were not included. Also, the stigma associated with substance use may influence what is recorded in hospital records and contribute to under-reporting of cases.
