The most common form of storing natural gas underground in Europe is in depleted fields. Roughly 65 percent of all working gas was kept in former extraction sites. By comparison, the least common form was storage in rock caverns, with Sweden being the only country to use such facilities. Overall, some 1.83 petawatt hours worth of working gas were stored underground across Europe.
