Japan's participation at the Summer Olympics from 1912 to 2016. Historically, 98 medals in total were earned by Japanese athletes at the gymnastics games. At the Rio de Janeiro 2016 Olympics, athletes from Japan won gold medals at the games for swimming, gymnastics, wrestling, judo, and badminton. The 2020 Summer Olympics and Paralympics were originally planned to be held from July 24 to August 9 in Japan but postponed for about a year due to the global coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19).
Judo
Judo is a sport that originated in Japan. It became an official Olympic sport for male athletes in the first summer Olympic games held in Tokyo in 1964, and for female athletes in the Barcelona 1992 Summer Olympics. Since then, Japanese athletes have been dominating competitions for medals in all Summer Olympics where Judo events took place. In the Rio 2016 Olympics, Japan won the highest number of medals in the Judo competitions, 12 in total, three of which were gold. Before the postponement in February 2020, 12 athletes had already been selected as representatives for the Tokyo 2020 games.

Gymnastics is also an Olympic sport in which Japanese athletes have delivered excellent results throughout the history of the Olympic games. The Japanese national team won five consecutive Olympic victories in male team competitions from 1960 (Rome) to 1976 (Montreal). After a period of stagnation, Japan’s male team returned in the 2000s to lead the team competition, earning the gold medal in Rio in 2016. They also won two gold medals in a row in the individual all-around competition at the London 2012 and Rio 2016 Olympics. Kohei Uchimura in particular gained overwhelming popularity in his home nation. The representatives for Tokyo 2020 had not yet been determined as of March 2020, but Uchimura will likely gain his place in the team.
