In 2020, the volume of cruise passengers taking up to three days vacation declined by 78 percent, while that for four to six days slumped by 83 percent, compared to the previous year. This significant decline was due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2021, however, the numbers of cruise passengers from Hong Kong picked up again.

According to the source, the passenger statistics are provided by CLIA's ocean cruise line members, which covered over 95 per cent of the global cruise industry capacity. Additional data was also collected from non-CLIA cruise lines by CHART Management Consultants.
