According to a survey conducted by the Nippon Research Center in October and November 2020, 86 percent of people in Japan recognized Pokémon characters. The first Pokémon video games were released in 1996 for Nintendo's Game Boy handheld console. Pokémon's level of recognition was only rivaled by that of Super Mario.
