According to a survey conducted by the Nippon Research Center in Japan from November to December 2023, 91 of the respondents recognized Funasshi, the mascot of Funasshi City, and Kumamon, the mascot of Kumamoto Prefecture. These two mascots were the most well-known local mascots in Japan. By serving as ambassadors, characters like Funasshi and Kumamon help to increase the attention for their home city or prefecture, which is thought to contribute to the stimulation of tourism and economic development.
