In 2000, the country had around 158 thousand square kilometers of land occupied by forests, whereas in 2016, the last year informed by the source, 180 thousand square kilometers of forest land were registered. This represents an increase of almost 14 percent when compared to 2000.

This includes land from which forests have been cleared but that will be reforested in the foreseeable future. This excludes woodland or forest predominantly under agricultural or urban land use and used only for recreation purposes."
