Arable and cropland area in Argentina

The land area devoted to agriculture in Argentina has considerably increased since 2000. In that year, an area of approximately 284.4 thousand square kilometers in the country was classified as arable land or land occupied with permanent crops, whereas in 2016, the total arable and cropland area reached 402 thousand square kilometers, showing an increase of over 40 percent.

Permanent crops are those that occupy land for a long period and do not have to be planted for several years after each harvest (e.g. cocoa, coffee, rubber). Land under vines and trees and shrubs producing fruits, nuts and flowers, such as roses and jasmine, is so classified, as are nurseries (except those for forest trees, which should be classified under "forests and other wooded land")."
