In 2022, the eastern state of Telangana in India had the highest number of cyber blackmailing offenses compared to the rest of the country with approximately 234 cases registered with the authorities. The country recorded more than 696 such cases that year. This category of crime fell within the scope of the Information Technology Act, which came under the purview of the sections 506, 503 and 384 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and special and local laws (SLL).
