In 2015, around 672.4 million single-use cups were consumed in South Korea. As of August 2018, South Korean government started to ban the use of single-use cups in stores except for takeout orders, then the consumption of disposable cups at coffee shops and fast-food restaurants showed a decrease. The government aims to reduce the use of disposable products by more than 35 percent by 2022, including the introduction of the cup deposit system which starts from 2021.
