In 2023, roughly 55 percent of the 3,423 people who have been officially euthanized in Belgium suffered from cancer. Just over 20 percent of euthanasia demands were made by people suffering from multiple pathologies. Furthermore, 1.4 percent suffered from psychiatric disorders and another 1.2 percent had cognitive disorders such as dementia. Since 2002, a condition for legal active euthanasia in Belgium is that the illness of a demander must be terminal and that they must be in great physical or mental suffering, with no available treatment to alleviate their distress.
