In 2023, over 23.4 thousand cars from the Japanese brands Toyota, Lexus, Honda, Nissan, and Infiniti were registered in South Korea. Recently, worsening relations and trade disputes between South Korea and Japan impacted the sales of Japanese cars in the country. After the sales drop during the global financial crisis, the Dieselgate scandal where it was discovered that Volkswagen and Audi had falsified the emissions data from their diesel engines helped Japanese automakers regain ground in 2016 and 2017.
