Number of arrivals in accommodation establishments in Milan 2010-2022

The number of tourist arrivals in Milan's accommodation establishments grew significantly in 2022 over the previous year, after shrinking with the onset of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. That said, tourist arrivals in the Italian city remained below pre-pandemic levels, reaching just above six million in 2022.

International and domestic arrivals in Milan

As countries worldwide implemented travel restrictions to limit the spread of the virus, the number of international tourist arrivals in Milan experienced a sharp drop in 2020 when compared to the previous year. After peaking at over 4.5 million in 2019, inbound arrivals in Milan decreased to around 773 thousand in 2020. As a result of the pandemic, the number of domestic arrivals in travel accommodations in Milan went also down dramatically in 2020. That year, nearly 1.2 million Italian visitors arrived in Milan in 2020, declining from approximately 3.5 million in 2019.

Tourist accommodations in Milan

As the total number of national and international tourists concerns the arrivals in tourist accommodations, it is interesting to understand which kind of facilities the city offers. Considering the number of hotels in the municipality of Milan, most facilities were rated as four-star as of February 2021. Meanwhile, holiday flats were the most popular non-hotel facilities in the city as of the same month.
