In the United Kingdom (UK), the share of health research expenditure towards etiology research amounted to 30.6 percent in 2018, drop from 34.7 percent in the period 2004/05. The share of research spending on underpinning in the UK has also dropped since 2004/05, going from 33.6 percent to 21.7 percent in 2018. While research on treatment development has increased from an 8.6 percent share of expenditure to approximately twelve percent in 2018.
