3In 2021, over 17.8 thousand Audi cars were registered in South Korea. 2020 was a strong comeback after Audi sold less than one thousand cars in 2017 and sales in 2016 dropped to half of what it were in 2015. Audi's sales dropped over the past two years because of its involvement in the so-called Dieselgate, the diesel engine emissions falsification scandal where the Volkswagen Group, of which Audi is a member, was found to have falsified the emissions data to make it seem that their diesel engine cars were generating one-tenth as much air pollution as they actually were. The Korean government canceled the import certifications of 32 Volkswagen and Audi models, which struck a body blow to the imports and sales of Audi cars in 2017.
