The majority of pedal-assist electric bicycle owners in Japan reported that a major factor influencing their purchasing decision was the trustworthiness of the pedelec manufacturer, according to a survey conducted in December 2019. Major pedelec brands in Japan include the inventor of the pedal-assist system for bicycles, Yamaha, as well as Panasonic and Bridgestone.
While bicycles with built-on self-propulsion systems are treated like mopeds in Japan, models using an electric power assisted system to support the pedaling motion are considered to be bikes in compliance with traffic laws.
