From 2010 to 2017, the rates at which opioids stronger than morphine were prescribed to adults discharged from U.S. emergency departments have decreased. In contrast, the rate of prescriptions for opioids weaker than morphine has increased from 3.2 percent in 2012-2013 to 5 percent in 2016-2017.
