The origin of migrants who died in the Mediterranean Sea is mostly unknown, mixed, or only presumed. Between January and August 2021, 641 migrants, presumably from Sub-Saharan Africa, died in the attempt to cross the Mediterranean Sea. In addition, 139 individuals who died in the Mediterranean Sea originated from North Africa.
In 2020, 354 North Africans were recorded to have died in the Mediterranean Sea, while further 31 individuals came from Sub-Saharan countries.
The Mediterranean Sea recorded worldwide the largest number of deaths and missing cases of people who migrated. Between January and March 2021, two hundred migrants died by crossing the Central Mediterranean route.
