The largest share of bicycle related accidents in Japan occurred due to the sudden appearance of a second party, according to a survey conducted among Japanese cyclists in September 2019. The survey revealed that besides sudden appearances of bicycles, cars or pedestrians, other common reasons for (near) accidents involving bicycles were the usage of mobile phones, headphones or umbrellas.

*Out of 1,000 survey respondents, 639 respondents, who were involved in an accident or near accident while riding their bicycles replied to this question.
Original question: "Please tell us about the circumstances in which you have encountered or almost encountered a bicycle accident."
Survey subjects were residents riding their bicycle at least once a month.
