According to a survey conducted in September 2019 among cyclists in Japan, morning and evening rush hour periods were the most common times of the day for encountering (near) accidents involving bicycles. The survey results revealed that over 44 percent of respondents have experienced or just managed to avoid bicycle accidents during early evening hours, when the commuter traffic usually picks up.

*Out of 1,000 survey respondents, 667 respondents, who have almost encountered a bicycle accident, replied to this question.
Original question: "During which time of the day have you almost encountered a bicycle accident as a cyclist or as a pedestrian?"
Survey subjects were residents riding their bicycle at least once a month.
