Number of U.S. unicorn exits 2006-2024
In the United States, more unicorns exited via IPO or acquisition between January and December 2021 than in any entire year since 2006. The number of U.S. unicorn exits during 2021 reached 211. In 2024, there were 31 unicorn exits in the U.S.
Unicorns are private companies that are valued at one billion U.S. dollars or more. If that company subsequently goes public or is acquired, it is no longer referred to as a unicorn. When a unicorn company does one of these two things, it is called an exit.
