From 2000 to 2019, most artists winning the Sanremo Music Festival in Italy were men. As of the survey period, they accounted for 69 percent of all winning artists of the festival. Started in 1951, the Sanremo Music Festival is currently the most popular Italian song competition. Held annually in the Italian city of Sanremo, in Liguria, the festival is broadcasted by RAI, the national public broadcasting company. The format of the Sanremo Music Festival was the main inspiration for the Eurovision Song Contest.
