Domestic film share in box office in Russia 2015-2023
In 2023, Russian films accounted for over 70 percent of the total box office revenue in cinemas across the country. That was the largest share of domestic movies in the box office revenue over the observed period. The exodus of key Western film distributors from the Russian market in response to the invasion of Ukraine contributed to the increase in the market share of domestic films. Previously, the share increased in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic, when several major foreign film releases were postponed due to restrictions.
