Carsharing car parc Moscow 2015-2020

The outstanding growth in the volume of carsharing vehicles in the Russian capital made it one of the leading carsharing market players worldwide. In 2019, Moscow beat the previous year’s leader - Tokyo, by accounting for a carsharing car-parc of over 30 thousand vehicles in that year. According to experts' estimates, this number should have increased to 36.6 thousand units in 2020.

While the number of carsharing vehicles in Moscow has been on the rise, the number of companies operating in the market declined in 2019, after peaking at 14 operators in the previous year. Such tendencies do not always mean the closure of businesses, but also mergers between companies. Carsharing dominated the market of shared mobility in the Russian capital, with the number of average daily trips made by this mean of transportation amounting to approximately 170 thousand - largely exceeding trips by city bikes and e-scooters. The shared mobility trend has been developing much faster in Moscow compared to other regions of the country. Namely, the carsharing fleet in the capital has been several times greater than that of Saint Petersburg throughout the years.

Already in 2018, Russia had one of the largest users’ base of carsharing services in the world. The revenue of the market exceeding 55 million U.S. dollars in 2019, forecasted for a more than twofold increase for the coming years. However, use of carsharing vehicles was still far from being as popular as taxi services. Despite the shared mobility market growth in the country, most of its residents believed that car ownership would not lose its importance in the future.
