Global hostel count 2019, by region
Hostels are a form of low-cost, short-term lodging where guests can book a bed, typically in a shared room (mixed or single-sex), and have communal use of social spaces, a kitchen and laundry facilities. On the whole, those staying in a hostel are doing so primarily for social and/or money-saving reasons. Asia was the region with the largest number of hostels worldwide, with the total reaching 5,829 as of October 2019. Europe held the second largest number with 4,738 hostels.
