According to a study conducted between November and December 2017, close to nine out of every 100 cigarette packs consumed in Mexico had illicit origins. With an increase on taxes for tobacco products in the country as of 2020, it has been discussed whether the measure might have an effect on the consumption of illicit products. As of January 2020, the average cost of the most widely consumed brand of cigarettes in the country, Marlboro, amounted to 63 Mexican pesos.
