In 2021, ten vineyards were valued at over one million euros per hectare. The most expensive one was the vineyards of Bourgogne grand cru, whose value was estimated at 7.075 million euros per hectare that year. Among the regions represented in this ranking were five wines from the Côte d'Or department and six vineyards in Gironde (Bordeaux), including Pauillac and Pomerol.
Soaring land prices
French farmers are seeing the price of their land skyrocket. In 1997, when a young farmer wanted to buy a new piece of land, he would have had to spend 3,030 euros per hectare. By 2019, the price had doubled, reaching a value of 6,000 euros. Farmers in the Bouches-du-Rhône are the ones who had to pay the most. In this department, one hectare of land cost 15,200 euros in 2021.
Burgundy, a PDO agriculture region
Burgundy is not only famous for its wines. Burgundian farmers produce the most PDO products in France. Indeed, the departments of Côte-d'Or and Saône-et-Loire are among the French departments offering the highest number of products under the AOP (Appellation d'origine contrôlée) label. Although PDO wines are a real tool for promoting French agricultural savoir-faire, winegrowers are finding it more and more difficult to sell them for export. The wine industry is not the only agricultural sector to suffer from the economic slowdown, especially in the European internal market. The entire French agricultural sector has had a negative trade balance with EU countries since 2015.
