In the final vote in the 2020 Iowa Caucus, Bernie Sanders had 26.5 percent of the statewide popular vote. This compares to 25.1 percent for Pete Buttigieg.
The winner is generally determined by the number of "State Delegate Equivalents" (SDEs), not the popular vote. SDEs are derived from the result in each caucus precinct, meaning the winner of the popular vote may not be the overall winner. This is indeed the case in the final results, which saw Pete Buttigieg having a narrow lead over Bernie Sanders.
Democratic Party Iowa caucus results in 2020, by share of popular vote
(final round)
*Values are with 100 percent of the vote counted, and from the final round of voting, after all candidates who do not meet a viability threshold of 15% in the first round of voting are eliminated. The vote share for "uncommitted" and "other" have been excluded.
The overall popular vote does not determine the winner of the caucus. Instead, the winner is considered to be candidate with the most State Delegate Equivalents. State Delegate Equivalents are derived from the popular vote in each caucus and are used to calculate how many delegates each candidate receives for the state convention. The candidate with the most State Delegate Equivalents therefore will ultimately have more votes towards their bid to be the presidential candidate at 2020 national Democratic Party convention.
Only those candidates who received one or more State Delegate Equivalent have been included.
The Iowa caucus for the Democratic Party serves as the first opportunity for voters to express their preferences for the Party's nomination.
