China Citic Bank financed leading global thermal coal mining companies to the tune of 7.6 billion U.S. dollars in 2023 alone. Two other Chinese banks, China Merchants Bank and Shanghai Pudong Development Bank, followed behind, as their funding of the world's coal industry reached 3.78 billion U.S. dollars, and 3.34 billion U.S. dollars, respectively.
