Starting from 2020, the Vietnamese government planned to increase the amount of passengers travelling by railway both nationwide and in urban areas. The goal for 2020 was to increase the nationwide share of railway users to two percent. To reach this goal, there are plans to build a dual-gauge high-speed railroad on the North-South axis of the country.
