The majority of residents in Aichi and Nara, around 53 percent, claimed to use cashless payment methods more frequently after the increase of the consumption tax to ten percent, according to a survey conducted in November 2019 among locals of the 47 prefectures in Japan.
Japan increased its consumption tax from eight to ten percent in October 2019. In an attempt to promote cashless payment methods and to decrease the burden on consumers at the same time, the Japanese government implemented a reward point system for cashless purchases together with the tax hike.
