Number of Japanese residents in Munich 2014-2023
As of October 2023, the number of Japanese residents in Munich amounted to approximately 4.84 thousand expats. The southern German city was home to the second largest Japanese community within Germany after Düsseldorf. In the observed period, the size of the Japanese population in the city has been growing steadily until it peaked in 2016 at almost six thousand residents, but except for an irregular jump in 2020 has been on a general downward trend ever since.
The statistic, which is based on the information gathered by Japanese diplomatic missions abroad, does not include descendants of Japanese emigrants (nikkeijin) who do not hold Japanese citizenship. People with multiple citizenship are counted.
