In 2023, New Zealand's wine export value in the international market reached approximately 2.4 billion New Zealand dollars. This reflected an increase of over 450 million New Zealand dollars compared to the previous year.

New Zealand’s wine exports

Export demand plays a significant role in driving New Zealand's wine industry. In the year ending in June 2023, New Zealand exported more than 314 million liters of wine, marking an increase from the previous year. Furthermore, the export volume of wine is anticipated to continue to grow. Due to its robust export industry, New Zealand ranks among the top twelve countries in the world in terms of the volume of wine exported. Australia, the United States, and the United Kingdom are major wine export markets for New Zealand, indicating the global demand for premium wines and highlighting the country's prominent position in the international wine sector. 

Leading wine regions and signature varieties

With an overall wine production volume of 360.7 million liters, New Zealand yielded a great variety of high-quality wines in 2023. Although there was a slight decrease from the previous year's peak, the country endures a reputation for outstanding wine production. Marlborough, known as New Zealand's wine-growing capital, maintained its leading position in the industry, particularly due to its Sauvignon Blanc, which remained the top grape variety used for wine production. Marlborough and Central Otago, with its picturesque valleys, are the key wine-growing regions for Pinot Noir, the nation's second most popular variety. Hawke's Bay, with its diverse landscape, is also a major contributor of both red and white wines, further enriching New Zealand's impressive collection with a wide range of flavors.
