In 2020, nearly half of Italian respondents predicted they would watch more streaming services than that they would watch traditional television. This according to survey results from Ipsos, where Italians were asked about their expectations on future technology use. Respondents referred to popular on demand services as well as to free streaming platforms of TV broadcasters, such as Rai’s Replay TV. According to a survey, the main reason to use such platforms was to catch up with content that was previously missed.
Traditional TV streaming
Traditional broadcasters are intercepting the online audience by offering their content on own streaming platforms. In the ranking of the most streamed TV channels, the Sky channel Digital Fluid Sport topped with over 74 thousand legitimate streams only in the week between 15th and 21st March 2020, followed by other Sky entertainment- and sport-dedicated channels. However, if we look at the time length of streams over the same period, full-format programming channels kept viewers stuck at the screen much longer. In fact, Rai’s first channel headed the ranking with a total stream duration of 2,894 thousand hours.
Live video streaming
Video content streamed live is often provided by traditional broadcasters. A survey conducted in Italy in 2018 showed that close to 53 percent of individuals watching live video online were on the website or app of a TV network. Another 41.5 percent of them browsed on social media platforms.
