The combustion of gas was the largest emitter of greenhouses gases from residential and commercial buildings in 2018, amounting to some 452 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent, while high leakages of methane accounted for 332 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent in the same year.
