While Malaysia has made significant progress in the past few years in reducing gender inequality, the level of inequality between men and women is still high compared to developing countries. In a survey on women's equality conducted by Ipsos in 2019, the leading factor that Malaysian respondents' perceived to help women get ahead was being confident, with 36 percent of respondents sharing this view. However, according to Malaysian respondents, this factor was not seen as the most important factor for the men to get ahead in their country.
