Swedish food service industry's revenue 2019, by establishment type

In 2019, lunch and evening restaurants in Sweden generated more than 63 billion Swedish kronor in revenue —the highest figure among all restaurant types in the country. The total revenue of the Swedish food service industry in that year surpassed 140 billion Swedish kronor, with the region of Stockholm representing the largest share of it.

Do Swedes prefer restaurants or takeaway?

According to a survey conducted in November 2019 in Sweden, 60 percent of respondents preferred to have lunch at a restaurant, a figure that declined to less than 50 percent when asking about dinner preferences. Consequently, it was the other way around for takeaway food.

Lunch at restaurants

Between 2015 and 2019, the share of people going out for lunch at least once a week in Sweden remained quite stable. As of 2019, 31 percent of Swedish respondents stated to do so.
