Largest banks in Europe, by return on equity 2022
Among the European banks considered, Credit Suisse had the highest return on equity (RoE) in 2022. The Swiss bank reported a RoE of 16.1 percent, which was followed by BBVA with 14.6 percent. RoE is calculated by taking the amount of net income returned as a percentage of the shareholders equity. On a country level, Germany continued to see poor profitability in its banking sector, with returns on equity well below the European average.
